Compare Standard vs. Short Fence Conversion Systems

Both systems use the same patented spring-loaded arm. The right one for you depends on your fence height and cat's athleticism.

Installing Your Fence

Three steps from first measurement to mounted system

1. Measure

Walk your fence line. Note linear feet, corners, and gate posts so your kit ships with the right component counts.

2. Order

Pick the system that matches your fence height. Round up to account for fence corners, gates to span over, and wasted material. Make sure to get your fasteners that suit your surface (more on that below). Don't forget U-bolts for metal fences.

3. Install

Attach mounting plates with fasteners suited to your fence type. Slot in the spring arms. Stretch and secure the netting.

Fence Compatibility

Will this work with my fence?

Both systems install on every common fence type. Mounting fasteners aren't included — different fence types need different ones. Tap yours to see the recommended fasteners.

Compatibility

Yes - works with all standard wood fences. Mounting plates attach to your fence posts or horizontal stringers using two mounting points each.

Fasteners & brackets

Bugle-head wood screws (sold separately at any hardware store):

  • 4×4 Fence Posts: Use 1¾" to 2" length #8 bugle-head wood screws
  • Fence Stringers: Typically use 1¾" or less (to avoid penetrating the board) #8 bugle-head wood screws

Install notes

While not always necessary, we recommend pre-drilling pilot holes to prevent splitting, especially on pressure-treated or older wood.

Compatibility

Yes - but vinyl installation depends on your post construction.

Fasteners & brackets

Fastener choice depends on what's inside your posts:

  • Posts with internal backing (e.g., a wood post inside the PVC/vinyl surround): Match the fastener to the backing material (wood, for example).
  • Hollow posts (most common): Backing material (ex. a wood post) must be added inside the post before installation to ensure a secure hold.
  • PVC/Vinyl-Only Alternative: If you want to mount directly to PVC/vinyl panels without backing, we recommend using through-bolts and washers.

Install notes

If your vinyl posts are hollow, contact our team before ordering so we can recommend the right reinforcement approach for your fence.

Use a vinyl strip kit to secure your fence material to the brick/block wall to prevent cats escaping.

Add a Secure Bottom Edge to Your Fence

Compatibility

Yes - works with chain link, wrought iron, and ornamental aluminum fences. Mounting plates clamp around posts up to 2½" in diameter.

Fasteners & brackets

U-bolts sized to your posts (sold separately):

  • Round posts (chain link): Match the U-bolt to your post diameter. Note that corners, endpoints, and gate posts are typically larger than line posts.
  • Square posts (aluminum, wrought iron): Square U-bolts - 2" is the most common size.
  • Alternative: Metal self-tapping screws (#8, ½" to ¾" long) for areas where U-bolts don't fit due to fence hardware.

Install notes

U-Bolts are sold separately, but can be added to your order using the link below

Add U-Bolts to Your Order

Compatibility

Yes - works with brick, cinder block, stucco-over-block, and solid concrete walls.

Fasteners & brackets

Masonry screws (sold separately at any hardware store):

  • Standard option: 3/16" × 1¼" hex washer head concrete anchor. TapCon kits include the correct drill bit.
  • For best fit in mounting plate holes: 3/16" × 1¾" Phillips flat (bugle) head concrete anchor.

Install notes

Always pre-drill a pilot hole to prevent cracking the masonry. When possible, align fasteners with mortar joints - this makes future repair easier if the system is ever removed.

Use a vinyl strip kit to secure your fence material to the brick/block wall to prevent cats escaping.

Common questions

Will the conversion system contain a determined climber or "escape artist" cat?

Yes. The pivoting spring-loaded arm is what makes the system work. When a cat
reaches the top, the arm rotates inward and the cat loses footing, dropping
back into the yard. This is more effective than fixed barriers like rollers,
which determined cats can sometimes defeat. Every system is backed by our
Escape Free Guarantee

Can I install this myself, or do I need a contractor?

Most customers install the Purrfect Fence conversion system themselves over a weekend. The kit is designed for DIY installation with common tools (drill, level, ladder). Our install guides walk through each step, and our customer service team can answer specific questions.

Are fasteners included? What about U-bolts for metal posts?

Fasteners are not included with the conversion system. Because the system installs on a wide range of fence types (wood, vinyl, metal, masonry), each fence material requires different fasteners. Our fence type guide above on this page lists the recommended fastener for your fence (such as #8 bugle-head wood screws for wood posts, or U-bolts for chain-link and ornamental metal posts). Everything is available at any home improvement store, and the right size depends on your post diameter.

How do I handle gates, corners, and oddly spaced posts?

Gates and corners use slightly different mounting hardware than straight runs. Our components collection includes extra conversion arm assemblies for corners, gates, and wider post spacing. If your fence has unusual layout (curves, multiple gates, sections at different heights), send us a photo and we'll happily help design the kit for your space.

How long does the fence last outdoors?

The cat-proof mesh netting is UV-resistant and rated for 10+ years of outdoor exposure in standard climates. Hardware (spring arms, brackets, mounting plates) is built for long-term outdoor use. Replacement parts are available individually if any single component ever needs to be replaced.

What's your shipping range and return policy?

Free shipping is included on most kits and components to the continental US and to most of Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan). For Hawaii, Alaska, US territories, and other Canadian provinces, contact us for a subsidized rate. We also ship internationally (Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, and most of the world); UK customers can order from our UK site. For full details, see our shipping page.

What if I need help figuring out what to order?

Send us a photo of your fence and one of our specialists will recommend the right system, give you a footage estimate, and answer any compatibility questions. Free, no commitment. We can also walk you through your fence type, post spacing, and any unusual layout before you order.
